Composer, producer, and musician from Brooklyn, NY and Tacoma, WA, now based in Los Angeles, Brad Oberhofer carved out his own milieu with Time Capsules II (2012) and Chronovision (2015). Turning heads, he garnered critical acclaim from Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, The Line of Best Fit, Consequence of Sound, Vice, and more in addition touring with Sleigh Bells, Beach House, and Matt & Kim and enchanting audiences at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, SXSW, and The Late Show with David Letterman.
Throughout 2020, he performed 115 consecutive nights of improvised piano on Instagram Live, with the sole objective of comforting lonely people during the pandemic. After years of touring with his band, producing its music and landing dozens of synch placements, Oberhofer has also established himself as an in-demand composer for film, television and advertisements, as well as performing as an instrumentalist on recordings by the likes of Katy Perry, King Princess, Moses Sumney, Amber Mark and others.
On July 30, 2021, Oberhofer released his new single “What Does It Mean To Me?” The track pairs shimmering piano with a falsetto-spiked refrain backed by warbling harmonies akin to a cyborg barbershop quartet awash in reverb. It’s tense dream pop underpinned by wistful crescendos and soundtrack-worthy synth transmissions. The track follows a number of recent collaborations including co-writing fan favorite “4Runner” from Rostam’s latest LP, which Pitchfork called the “ecstatic peak” and Rolling Stone called “thrilling”.
Oberhofer says of “What Does It Mean To Me?”
“It’s a reminder that not much really matters. If something feels like it matters too much, you just have to ask yourself, ‘What does it really mean to me?’ That form of questioning has often enabled me to set my spirit free.”
